About

I am a software developer who lives on the Grand Strand in SC.

I have been pondering, analyzing, and trying to figure out how to integrate computers into people’s lives for more than 35 years. I realize that, just like fire, a computer is a tool and not an end in itself. However, I'm not so sure we really understand even now the best way to do wield this amazing tool.

I love data and data analysis. My nickname at the first company I founded (in 1994) was “Commander Data.” I love figuring out how to manage and process massive volumes of data. I think in sets.

However, nobody wants data; they want Information. The key to turning data into information is effective visualization. The foundation of effective visualization is having the proper data structures. These structures must be both flexible, so that they can be re-arranged to suit different analysis dimensions, and robust so that they withstand the accumulation of data without being overwhelmed.

What I am always looking for is an opportunity to work with smart people solving hard problems using computers.

Personal

A longtime coder, I received Apple ][+ serial number 536 (I still have it and it boots) for Christmas in 1978 at the age of 13 (thanks Mom & Dad!) and have never looked back. I have worked on many different platforms and many different languages over the years. My primary non-esoteric languages are Ruby and (recently) PHP.

A devout, traditional, evangelical Christian, I have been married for 34 years and have a son (29) who is a Submarine Warfare Officer in the U.S. Navy and a daughter (27) who is also a (C++/Python) coder. My son and his wife have 2 children and I claim the title as the first urbit contributor who is also a Grand Father. ;)

Professional Bio

I am a dynamic, technology/engineering, team leader and an expert in relational databases and object-oriented software design. I have founded or helped start 6 different companies, going 3-2 with one in progress.

In 1994, I was a founder of Power Team, an early entrant into the newly deregulated power trading markets in the early 90's, which, through eventual acquisition, became Exelon Power Team today. I went on to either found or become one of the first 10 employees at companies in the energy sector, financial services, eCommerce, and (currently) logistics.

The most successful of which is HedgeServ, where I was the Director of Integration and the 8th employee. HedgeServ is now a world leader in hedge fund administration, employs over 1750 people, and has more than $450B in assets under management.

I was also a key player in the early (2012-16) success of Revzilla, now the world's foremost motorcycle-centric eCommerce site.

Prior to joining DeliveryCircle, where I am now the CTO, I was most recently the Director of East Retail IT for NRG Energy where I oversaw a 26-person department with a $2.5 million+ budget.
